Sean Duffy (born 1963 in New Jersey) is an American politician, writer, and a member of the Republican Party . From 2001 to 2005 he was Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications to Colorado Governor Bill Owens where he oversaw the administration's external affairs operation and served as the Governor's chief speechwriter . Before coming to Colorado, Duffy served in a number of key roles in Pennsylvania politics and government; including as education spokesman for Governor Tom Ridge . Additionally, Duffy is a principal at The Kenney Group, a public relations and political consulting firm, based in Denver, CO . In 2006, he served as Executive Director of Coloradans for Fairness and Equality, the statewide organization promoting domestic partnerships and opposing the Constitutional ban on same-sex marriage . During the 2000 election season, he served as a columnist for National Review Online, and has been a frequent talk-radio guest host . Earning the label “Top Politician†in the July 2006 Top of the Town edition of Denver’s 5280 Magazine during the 2006 election season, Duffy received national attention as a straight, conservative Republican leading a first-in-the nation ballot initiative for basic legal rights for gay couples . He was president of The Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives, a statewide, non-partisan public policy research organization based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to his duties as the Foundation’s chief executive, Duffy focused on education and technology policy and authored two newsletters. .
